Study Abroad in Italy
With sites in Ferrara, Florence, and Rome, the Middlebury School in Italy offers a wide range of environments for academic and cultural immersion. Students have the opportunity to enroll directly into an Italian university, taking courses in disciplines ranging from Renaissance literature to biology.
Students on the program come in at the intermediate-advanced level of Italian and are commited to developing their language skills. By adhering to the Middlebury Language Pledge, they reap the benefits of linguistic immersion for the duration of their time abroad. By living and studying with Italians and involving themselves in the community through volunteer work, internships, and extracurricular activities, they have the chance to build authentic relationships and integrate fully into life in their host city.
In Florence, the flagship site of the School in Italy and home of the Middlebury Sede, students take courses at one of our partner institutions: the Università degli Studi di Firenze or the Accademia di Belle Arti. In Ferrara and Rome, students take courses at our partner universities, the Università degli Studi di Ferrara and La Sapienza- Università di Roma. At all sites, students may attend one Middlebury organized class and also have the option of completing an internship for credit. All students are exposed to Italian in their daily life by living in an Italian homestay or in apartments with Italian roommates.
